Our ongoing partnership with the estate of Alexander Girard continues into our SS25 collection with Cutout (pink), a print that Girard originally designed in 1954 during his tenure as the Head of Fabric and Textile Division at Herman Miller. More than 70 years later, Cutout serves as a prime example of Girard's masterful graphic work.
As a multi-disciplinary designer, Girard often leveraged his experience across mediums in his print work. Cutout is indicative of this, with roots in geometrical sculpture and block printing techniques. When he originally created the print, Girard used physical blocks to stamp dye directly onto fabric. However, armed with Herman Miller's production methods, Cutout was soon reengineered for screen printing. Just like block printing, screen printing can create "off-register" designs, where the slight misalignment of the print can mix pigments and create new hues. Cutout's genius is based in this concept, featuring countless off-register details throughout.
To continue Girard’s emphasis of quality craftsmanship, we had Cutout meticulously reengineered by our Italian partner mill on a summer-weight 100% cotton poplin. Each color was matched to its original Pantone, and extra care was taken to ensure pigments hold fast and resist bleeding. This is the first time Cutout has been printed on clothing.
