We're all familiar with the enigmatic waffle-knit thermal, but what about a woven waffle fabric? This season, we tasked our Japanese partner mill with creating a woven waffle fabric that looks and performs just like the knitted original, but engineered specifically for our shirts.
But why woven and not knit? Simply put, knits stretch and wovens don't! Stretching isn't a great thing for shirting, so it was important to avoid that. Do you want your buttons to come undone? We didn't think so!
Lucky for us, weaving a waffle texture also provides more room to play with texture, scale, and style. A two-step brushing process adds softness and extra warmth while an enlarged waffle scale creates an incredible depth of texture.

Characteristics:
Waffle fabrics originated in the 1800's Britain as one of the world's first performance textiles. Simultaneously insulating yet breathable and moisture wicking, waffle fabrics leveraged their unique construction for unparalleled function. Specifically, with a grid of ridges and valleys, the fabric keeps the fabric close against the skin and removed from it at the same time. Areas close to the body trap air and insulate, while areas away from it encourage wicked moisture to evaporate. Whether knit or woven, waffle fabrics are one of the best cold-weather options for tried and true functionality.
