Woven entirely by hand at our partner mill in Chennai, India, this fabric represents a confluence of Southeast Asian textile techniques, Indian Madras, Japanese indigo dying, and American shirtmaking. Deep cultural references often inspire our approach to design, but rarely have we worked with a fabric that combines this many pedigrees and weave techniques into one.
Organic indigo was used to dye each yarn in a medley of blue hues, all of which contribute to the complex ikat motif. For those new to ikat, the faded ombre stripes are created by dyeing yarns multiple colors or tones. When the yarns change colors, so does the fabric. All yarn dying and weaving must be completed by hand due to the intricate nature of these processes.
